Calling and do-not-call lists

How OmniLead shows phone numbers, what the Business line, Personal and Do not call labels mean, and how to upload your own do-not-call list.

4 min readLast updated

OmniLead shows a phone number next to the email wherever a record has one: in search results after you reveal it, in the lead drawer and full lead page, in lists and exports. A revealed number is a link, so you can call it from your computer or phone. Before you do, check whether you're allowed to.

Before you call or text someone

In the United States, the National Do Not Call Registry lets people register their personal numbers against telemarketing calls, and many states run their own lists and rules on top. Canada, the UK and other countries have similar registries.

  • Calling or texting individuals? Check the National Do Not Call Registry and your state's rules first. Sales calls to a number on the registry are generally not allowed unless an exemption applies, such as an existing business relationship or the person's written permission.
  • Calling businesses? Business-to-business calls are generally exempt from the national registry. Some states still regulate them, and texts to mobile numbers have their own rules.
  • Autodialers and prerecorded messages need the person's prior consent in most cases, whatever the registry says. OmniLead doesn't dial for you: every call starts from your own phone.

OmniLead can't check the national registries for you. Access to them requires a paid subscription or a registration in your company's name, so the check has to be yours. You can upload your scrub file so OmniLead marks those numbers everywhere.

Business lines and personal numbers

Every revealed number carries a label:

LabelWhat it means
Business lineA number an organization publishes for business contact, such as a switchboard or office line.
PersonalA number on a person's record. It may be a direct work line, but treat it as reaching an individual.
Do not callThe number is on your workspace's do-not-call list, or its owner asked OmniLead to remove it. The call link is turned off.

The small information icon next to each number repeats the reminder to check the registry before calling individuals and links back here.

Upload your do-not-call list

Keep your own list of numbers nobody in your workspace should call, for example the file you download from your National Do Not Call Registry account, people who asked you not to call, or your CRM's do-not-call flags.

  1. Open the list

Go to Settings → Compliance and scroll to Do-not-call list.

  2. Upload your file

Click Upload list and choose a CSV or text file. One number per line works, as does a CSV with a phone column anywhere, or the registry's two-column area code and number format.

  3. Check the country

Numbers without a country code are read as numbers in the country you pick, United States by default. Numbers that start with + keep their own country. The preview shows how many numbers were found, how many repeat and how many couldn't be read.

  4. Upload

Click Upload. Owners and admins can tick Replace the numbers from earlier uploads when they load a fresh download. Numbers added by hand stay on the list either way.

Every number is stored in E.164, such as +14155550100, so (415) 555-0100 and +1 415 555 0100 match the same entry. To add a single number, click Add number. Anyone in the workspace can add numbers; only owners and admins can remove them.

Once a number is on the list, every lead, search result and export with that number shows Do not call, and the number can't be dialed from OmniLead. Exports include a phone_do_not_call column so your dialer or CRM can respect it too.

When someone removes their number

Anyone can remove their phone number from OmniLead through the public opt-out portal. The number is deleted from OmniLead's directory and from every workspace's leads, and only a one-way fingerprint is kept so it isn't added back. If the same number reaches your workspace again, for example in an import, it shows Do not call.

People in some US states

OmniLead doesn't hold personal data about individuals located in California, Vermont, Texas or Oregon, so search never shows people there. Businesses and organizations in those states are listed as usual, with their business lines. See Where our data comes from for how the directory is built.
